Super awesome!” is how Alex Gaudlitz described how she felt after winning the raffle for a new, rudderless V1 Marara outrigger, at the Iron Champs 2022 race last Saturday. This high-performance canoe was donated by ARE Outrigger World, exclusive ARE Tahiti distributor for North American and Hawaii.

Paddling out of race sponsor Kai Elua Outrigger Canoe Club, Gaudlitz has been paddling for eight years. She, along with her sister, Erika, paddle OC1s, and they were also part of Kai Elua Outrigger Canoe Club women’s team (Long Course – Open). But this will be her first time paddling a V1, and she couldn’t be more thrilled.

Iron Champs 2022 was the last race of the outrigger racing season, and the event was packed. Skilled paddlers, excited onlookers, cheerful beer enthusiasts, and eager shoppers flocking to the ARE Outrigger World tent to purchase exquisite Marere Tahiti paddles.

“This year was our return to normal, post-pandemic” said Wade Williford, who also paddles with the Kai Elua team. But when it comes to Iron Champs, “normal” is pretty extraordinary!
