The “Catalina Crossing” is little more than a month away, but excitement is already buzzing with the anticipation of the renowned Shell Va’a team from Tahiti being in the race.
The world’s preeminent outrigger team, Shell Va’a will make its maiden voyage paddling in the 2022 US Outrigger Champions—or “Catalina Crossing”—SCORA’s premiere event of the year. The two-day event, between Catalina Island and Newport Beach, features Women’s and Coed teams, Saturday, September 10, and Men’s teams, Sunday, September 11.
“I really appreciate that Shell Va’a finally coming!” said SCORA VP, Bud Hohl. Indeed, their presence will elevate the level of competition. Everyone wants a shot at beating the very best!
While this will be Shell Va’a’s first time paddling across Catalina Crossing, this team is no stranger to crossing channels. Shell Va’a has won the grueling Moloka'i Hoe canoe race between the islands of Molokai and Oahu, 12 of the last 14 years from 2006 to 2019, before the race was cancelled the past two years due to COVID-19.
Shell Va’a brings a time-honored tradition and paddling excellence and Tahitian culture to this event, which you won’t want to miss. Let’s get behind them and the many other first-rate teams that will paddling in the 2022 Catalina Crossing.
